Well, it depends what you like!
- My newest book is The Water Outlaws: genderbent wuxia epic fantasy about queer bandits rising up against a tyrannical empire. It’s fun, it’s fast-paced, it’s packed with Chinese martial arts! Reviews have called it “gloriously cinematic” and “a boisterous martial arts epic.”
- On the other hand, Zero Sum Game and its sequels are also chock full of action and tight-knit characters, but are a noir-ish contemporary series about a mathematician who can do math really fast (and uses it to kill a few too many people).
- If you like novella-sized, and if a queer, half-Chinese fairy tale retelling is more your jam — with lots of adventure and family angst — you want Burning Roses for sure.
- Prefer to try before you buy? Here are all my shorts that are available for free online. Most of them are slower, more intensely emotional stories than my novels. The two that are most well known:
- “As the Last I May Know” is about weapons of mass destruction, and won the 2020 Hugo Award.
- “Murder By Pixel: Crime and Responsibility in the Digital Darkness” is near-future science fiction about AI that mixes fiction and reality, and it’s been nominated for the Nebula, Ignyte, and Hugo Awards for 2023.
